thoughts (5)

It’s always fascinating to me how, in today’s world, once someone is seen as a “priest” or described as having a “spiritual calling,” there’s this unspoken expectation that it must be their sole vocation, like they must abandon all other pursuits and face only that. But in traditional settings, that was never the case.

These same people—priests, diviners, shamans (whatever label you prefer)—were also farmers, traders, builders, herbalists, artists. They had other creative, nurturing, and deeply human vocations that fed not just their livelihoods, but also their spiritual work. It was never meant to be just one thing.

And as long as we continue to insist on it being just one thing for these people, we will continue to have problems linked abuse of money, and the bastardization of spiritual gifts, in those circles and our communities.
