An epiphany cannot be understood, only felt. It is first an emotional exercise, and only afterward a mental one, but not an intellectual one.

Yes, there is a distinction.

The intellectual exercise is what comes later, after the newly experienced realization has settled into wisdom and understanding.

An epiphany ceases to be an epiphany once it is removed from its experiential context. Like an orgasm, it is only an orgasm while it is happening; anything that follows is something else.
